The Muscadet Vineyard

Muscadet Sèvre & Maine is a bone-dry, light-bodied white wine. It originates from the Loire Valley in France and is made using Melon de Bourgogne grapes. This grape varietal used to be grown massively in Burgundy until it was replaced by Chardonnay. It has however found in the Loire Valley the perfect climate to thrive.

To craft Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie, timing is key. First of all, the grapes must be harvested at optimum maturity and pressed as soon as possible to prevent the must from oxidizing. The fermentation occurs in concrete and buried tanks using yeasts selected for their neutral taste.

WINEGROWER SINCE FOUR GENERATIONS

The history of the Winery

The estate borders Briacé’s viticultural school in which brothers and owners Patrice and Pierre-Yves Charpentier learned their craft. Pierre-Yves is in charge of the vinification, whereas Patrice runs the office (sales & administration) and both of them do work in the vines with the help of experienced employees.

In 1989 they took over the family business and now run 36ha of vines under sustainable agriculture practices. Tradition and modernity go together in this estate as state-of-the-art technology is used to make wines that are the reflection of their unique terroir, fresh, lively and fragrant.

The winemaker

Domaine de La Bretonnière is owned by the Charpentier’s family for 4 generations.

Today the vineyard is runned by the 2 brothers Pierre-Yves and Patrice Charpentier. Pierre-Yves is taking care of the vinification, Patrice works at the office (sales & administration) and both of them are doing viticulture work. They did their first vintage in 1989 (resuming their parents activity). The vinification happens in concrete buried tanks.

All the wines are aged on lees and their special cuvée “Clos du Patis d’Enfer” is a one hectare production, extremely high quality Muscadet.
